Thank you all for your info and comments.
While unable to obtain a answer as to if and where the hard-disk
search-kit index is stored,
I have been glad to at least get a hint that it is / will be possible
to access this information (global file meta-data and contents) to use
and search through in developers own applications.

P.S. If anymore info becomes available on this subject please drop me a
note.
It would be greatly appreciated :-)

No NDA required. :-)

However I want to create a context sensitive live search...
Such as when the user clicks on a tab it gives related information
about the contents of the tab on the user's hard drive.
To do this I would have to be able to search the entire hard drives
meta-data index (and the indices contents as well).
I'm hoping that Apple has exposed this ability in Tiger to more than
just Spotlight and the Finder;
I could see truly amazing applications with this ability.
Once again I don't expect anyone to reply with NDA material - however
I would like any (and as much) non-NDA information as possible (even
if its simply a hint from a apple guy about if it is or will be
possible in Tiger).
There was a session on the WWDC schedule (which was posted at Apple's
WWDC site) called "Using the Spotlight Framework".
From this I think it is safe to surmise that Spotlight is more than
simply a feature of the finder... it is a framework for searching and
modifying the metadata that is stored on the system.
Unfortunately, you are likely to have to wait for the Tiger
documentation to be released for more information :-(
