Marcel,

I am saying you *cannot* redesign NSArray to adhere fully to be-value semantics because of the nature of Objective-C. Any attempt to do so will, by necessity, be incomplete, and quite probably rather useless.

I would say namely property lists are (a) very much useable, (b) reasonably complete, (c) considerably more on the the value-based semantics side than ref-based one.

What am I missing in that?

Homework assignment: compare and contrast, Objective-C vs. Property Lists

There are various subsets of Objective-C for which you can make different semantics work. For example, value semantics are completely observed if you remove all pointers and leave just scalar values. Would be sort of boring, though, without arrays or objects...

Just like there are (significantly larger) subsets of C and Objective-C that are fully compatible with Boehm's GC, but the whole language isn't.

Cheers,
