I was leaning in this direction, but hoped I could avoid creating another layer between the outline view and the XMLTree. I'll also need to provide a way to invalidate the entire structure or a particular node in the structure if the underlying data changes.

Using a dictionary could be a problem since XML documents can have multiple elements with same name. I'll probably end up creating my own node class that contains a NSArray of child nodes and lazily build the hierarchy as requested by the outline view.
