How to obtain the processor temperature?

I have seen a number of applications available that are able to
retrieve the processor temperature.
But I have yet to find anything within the Cocoa documentation, and
various other documentation from the Apple Developer web site. I have
also tried various mailing-lists too.
If anyone has done this before I am interested in finding out how.
