Recreating Mail.app's red "new email count" dot (in the dock)

Hi!

In my application I have several image buttons that represent folders. I'd like to display the number of items in each folder by placing a little red dot with the respective number on the image buttons, much like Mail.app does in its dock icon when there are new unread emails.

Right now, I have no clue how and where to start. Any little nudge in the right direction is appreciated!

Bye,
Michael
