NSRulerView and NSRulerMarker

I'd like to make a compact NSRulerView that shows the Markers right in where the hash marks are - not above as happens by default. But I can't figure out how to do this?

Also as I move a marker under program control (i.e. not dragging) I'd like the marker to draw its line down the client view and show its tooltip. Any suggestions on how to do this?
