Agreed. This 'moneyism' is a form of discrimination which, while quite
subtle, prevents a LOT of extremely bright people who don't feel the need
to be consumer whores from getting the jobs they could do better than the
Ferrari-driving, Versace wearing hedonist programmer.

Speaking as another stereotypical pennyless student, neither will I, and
this is something that managers, especially those that don't know what
they're doing, such as some of the people I've previously worked for,
overlook. This is an unfortunate fact. True intellectuals will guage a
person's ability to perform well on more than just what they happen (or
claim to happen) to know at this exact moment in time.

IT is much more into the whole 'useless certification required' business
than programmers, thankfully, but even programming departments/divisions
fall prey to this when they have inept management.
