Interesting.. as I also run postresql I went looking
and here is a line from my 'ls -l'

lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 11 8 Nov
22:54 tmp -> private/tmp

and from private:

drwxr-xr-x 21 root wheel 714 13 Mar 07:05 var

I didn't think postgresql was trying to write there...
have you upgraded to 7.4.2. I just did last night.
seems to be running great.
