applicationDidFinishLaunching not called, how can i set the head of the fish?

NSLOG mesasges in applicationDidFinishLaunching and awakeFromNib within
my class are not getting called. how can i make sure that my class is
considered the head of the fish (so to speak) for my MainMenu.nib?
