There has already been some recent "internal" discussion about FAQs and
in particular guides to "behaviour" on the list. Continued
meta-discussion is probably inappropriate here. If you have input,
please send email to:

In the interim:
Apple does already have a set of rules that apply to all mailing lists:
<
http://lists.apple.com/rules.shtml>
Unfortunately the links given at the end of that document have either
expired or are less relevant to this list (e.g. I suggest that no-one
start their subject line with "URGENT" as recommend here:
<
http://www.webfoot.com/advice/email.context.html?Email>).
My personal recommendation is Eric Raymond's "How To Ask Questions The
Smart Way":
<
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html>
It is aimed very squarely at a technical audience, it covers many of
the issues that arise on the list, and is long because it is so
comprehensive. There are a couple of sections that are largely
irrelevant, however these are easily identified and skimmed (e.g. "Web
and IRC forums..."). Note also the section on "How To Answer Questions
in a Helpful Way".
