NSButtonCell NSOnState doesnt draw

I'm drawing a disclosure button in a custom view by using NSButtonCell.
Everything works fine but changing the NSCell's state seems to have no
effect. I've checked in the debugger and the state actually changes.
I've tried the same thing with a Checkbox/ switchButton and it doesn't
work either. Is there something else I need to do to get the NSCell to
draw its state correctly?
