Okay, here's what I'd try. Open the Terminal and enter the following commands:

cd ~/Desktop
hdiutil create -megabytes 650 -layout CD bootcd.dmg

This will create an empty disk image on your Desktop. Now, we need to format it. Type the following command:

hdiutil attach -nomount bootcd.dmg

Now we need to format it. Open Disk Utility, click the grayed out disk that appears below the image and has a name like "diskXsY". Don't select the disk image itself or we'll mess up the partition map. Format the disk as a Mac OS X Extended volume. Don't make it journaled. Of course, you want to be sure that you format the disk image and not something else, like your hard drive. After you've formatted the disk, it should show up on the Desktop. If it doesn't, choose "Mount Volume" from the File menu.

Now, copy over an OS 9 System Folder onto the CD image. Finally, go back to the Terminal and type the following:

sudo bless -folder "/Volumes/<disk name>/System Folder" -folder9 "/Volumes/<disk name>/System Folder" -bootBlocks

Enter your admin password when prompted. Now unmount the image, burn it to a CD, and cross your fingers.

Disclaimer: I haven't done this myself, so I can't guarantee it will work. However, I think this should result in a bootable OS 9 CD.

Hi,
thanks for answering. No, Disk Utility cannot see the iBook disk as well.
I did so: the PB is on and the iBook in off. I connect the two computers
with both a FW cable and an Ethernet cable. Then I turn on the iBook holding
down the t key. Then I can see the big FW icon on the iBook. I wait 10
minutes and nothing happens on the PB. No icon in the Finder, no signals
with Disk Utility. I don't know Disk Warrior. Should I try that too?

Also, I tried to boot in traditional way and without extensions. I press
shif, then I see the dialog extension disabled, then I see the dialog
telling me that the computer has been not shutted down properly, then it
fixes the disk, it tells me the disk is OK, then I see a pregress bar at 10%
and there it freezes. So the disk should be OK.

The iBook's hard drive may be corrupted. Try connecting it to your
PowerBook with FireWire Target Mode again, but even if it doesn't mount
on the desktop, see if it will show up in DiskWarrior or Disk Utility.
If it does, try doing a verify and repair on the hard drive and see if
it fixes any errors.

Hi,
I am used to this list so I would like to ask here even if my question
has
nothing to do with Cocoa, please, it's an emergency.
I am looking for a MacOS 9 boot disk but I didn't find it at the Apple
Developer Support web site. I am a ADC registered user, so I logged in
there
but I discovered soon that the section "Download Software/MacOS 9"
grants
only the update to the 9.2.2.

My problem is the following. I have my friend's iBook running MacOS
9.0.
I tried to connect my external FW disk to this iBook then it freezed
immediately and now it cannot boot anymore even disabling the
extension,
even rebuilding the PRam. I am far away from my city and I have
nothing with
me but my PowerBook G4 with MacOS X with "Panther" and "Jaguar + MacOS
9"
installed on two separated internal partions, an external FW disk and
some
cable.
The iBook cannot see nor mount nor boot from the FW disk. So I though
to
burn a bootable CD with my local Jaguar-MacOS9-System Folder. The iBook
didn't boot from the CD holding down the "c" key at startup. I burned
the CD
with Toast dragging the system folder to its console and I marking the
check-box "bootable".
Instead the iBook booted againg from the original and corrupted MacOS
9.0
then it freezed at the same point "Booting in progress").
Last I tried to boot the iBook holding down the "t" key in order to
activate
a Fire-Wire connection and remove the System Preferences from the iBook
System Folder working remotely from my PowerBook. But my PB cannot see
the
iBook volume (!).
So, I have still thought, if I had a bootable MacOS9 disk I could boot
the
iBook and fix its Pref folder.

Where can I download a MacOS9 system?
Or, how could I fix this never ending problem?
Many thanks in advance.

Best Regards
