GIS Mapping

Does anyone know of a way to embed GIS capabilities into a Cocoa application? If not Cocoa, I'd be interested in any ways to build basic GIS functionality into my own custom programs on the Mac. I've looked at MapObjects and OpenMap, but they are rather slow on the Mac, disappointingly far slower than the same programs in Windows. I'm not sure if there's a way to make them run faster by creating a Cocoa Java application. Both apps use Java Beans. So far I haven't figured out a way to use Beans with Cocoa.

Any help would be much appreciated.
