There was a service, something like mail-archive.org or similar, where one could subscribe a mailing list to, and then they'd archive the letters and allow us to search them. I can't recall the correct URL, and I'd hope that mamasam gets functional again, and it anyway seems to go against the policy of lists.apple.com to archive the lists without permission from Apple -- but it's an option if the situation doesn't improve...

I might as well mention this now.

One project I've started on in the last several days is a python program that downloads the entire cocoa-dev archives and that will allow you to search your own private copy of the archives (I thought I'd use PyObjC for the UI), and would let you do things like search and browse messages by Cocoa classes mentioned and let you bring up the program from XCode (sort of like the double-click option/command documentation thing).

Right now, I'm still working on the download part, so the implementation of the search part is still wide open. I'm not really very well informed on search technology besides grep, so if anyone wants to help me with this project (e.g. create a python module for SearchKit, advice on how to structure the thing, etc), your help would be greatly appreciated.

I've read through the rules and regulations on the Apple lists site. As far as I can tell, something like this is permitted as long as the archive you build is for private use. If it isn't, I hope the Apple maintainers on the list tell me now so I don't get into any trouble.
