On a related note, is there a straightforward way to have kernel event
automatically picked up by a run loop and used to trigger a message to
an (Objective C) object?

/etc/localtime is a symbolic link on the timezone file, you could=20
try=3D20
kqueue with
EVFILT_VNODE and NOTE_DELETE on the original file linked by=3D20
/etc/localtime.
