Screen artifact from sheets in document window

While developing a Cocoa document-based application, I've been getting
an ugly artifact left on the screen after dismissing a window with
"Don't Save":
When a document is about to be closed and the "Do you want to save"
sheet is presented by Cocoa, clicking "Don't Save" closes the window as
expected but a black horizontal line is left on the screen over the
desktop or other windows that were behind, about 10% of the time. The
line appears to be from an enlarged "slot" that the sheet drops out of.
If the slot is enlarged when the sheet appears, then the horizontal
line is left after closing.
I have replicated this on several machines on 10.3.2 but not 10.3.3 so
far. My document window use the metal background, and this appears to
be required to produce the artifact.
Here's some screenshots:

Does anyone know a workaround for avoiding this artifact?
Thanks,
Paul Collins
