close menu weirdness

The close menu item on my document based application has gone off
the reservation. It appears grayed out or not seemingly at random (both
appearing as enabled when there is no document and disabled when there
is a perfectly good document available to close). Both the red close button
and cmd-W work perfectly well even though the menu item is not enabled.
I haven't overridden performClose anywhere.

I have, of course, engaged in cardinal sin: I mostly use the button and haven't
checked closing with the menu in a bit, so I'm not sure when this started.

Any ideas on where to look ?
