I would like to set the action of an NSToolbarItem in my ToolbarController class to be an IBAction that is located in my AppController class. Is this possible?

Sure. Just connect it to the responder chain - "First Responder" in IB, or with [tbItem setTarget:nil] in code. And make your AppController object a delegate of NSApp, so it's in the responder chain.

For more info, see Apple's docs at <http://tinyurl.com/2d7gn>
