It depends on the context. The word "linea" (leading to the English
words line and linen) would be a string, fishing line etc. but I'm not
sure that would be appropriate. The word "filum" (leading to Eng.
filament) is use in the context of hanging by a thread, including
figuratively in speech. In fact I suspect if one were after a
conceptual translation rather than a literal one then one would opt for
"stamen", which refers to the warp of a loom, since the phrase "stamina
ducere" means to draw threads both in the context of weaving and in the
context of drawing out or spinning a discussion or story. So I'd go
for stamen. I'd probably opt for something based on "terminus" for the
end in this context, but it's far too long since I did Latin to
remember how to make an adjective from a noun, let alone make the
endings match up!
