Others have described why this is... In 10.1.x, the Symbol keyboard is
one option to enter symbol characters. The Unicode hex input is
another (for those of you with a Unicode chart handy 8-) ). Both are
pretty obscure of course.

Apple is also looking at ways to make Symbol and other Dingbat entry a
lot more straightforward in Jaguar.
Well, two and a half years and two major OS upgrades on, it still isn't
any more straightforward. Text views still won't accept symbol
characters. And so far as I can see, the Symbol keyboard option doesn't
exist any more, so things are even worse.
Does anyone have any advice on how to let users put symbols in their
text?
