No, it would still work. I meant "the user's name" not "the
username". When they register, an application is typically registered
in the name of a user and (optionally) a company. If you encode this
info in your license key, and display it prominently, it will
immediately obvious it's a stolen copy if Jeff Meyer uses an app that
says "Licensed to Peter Watson".
Yes, but that's not the point. The original poster is trying to find a
way to prevent users from copying the registration code simply by
copying the preference file. If the preference file was tied to the
particular computer, then this would not be possible, and the user
would have to re-enter the code on the new machine, not just copy the
preference file.
