Ah, thanks.  I had missed that subtlety.  It all becomes clearer.

I was also confused by the field editor documentation,

... /Cocoa/Conceptual/TextEditing/Tasks/FieldEditor.html

where table 4 refers to the field editor for NSControl and table 6 for NSText. But of course, an NSTextView is with for an NSText while an NSTextField is an NSControl.
