Can NSStatusItem contain NSTextField ?

  • Subject: Can NSStatusItem contain NSTextField ?

I am trying to put a text input field into the menubar for a project I'm working on for myself. I've tried tinkering around with using the setView method of NSStatusItem but I can't seem to make it work. I know some people will say putting a text input field there is a really bad idea, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to do it for my project. :-)

Is setView barking up the wrong tree? If so does anyone know the proper way I could do this?

iSeek from Ambrosia does the very thing I'm trying to do but I can't figure out how they do it. Some have suggested they are just drawing a bordlerless window on top of the menubar vs. embedding it. Before
iSeek was bought by Ambrosia it was just a floating borderless window so that might lead credence to
that argument.

Thank you,
Phillip Moore
