If you're going to do simply leave extra space, recursing through the UI at runtime seems like a lot of overhead. I would suggest using nibtool to translate the nibs in advance (think of it as a compilation stage :-) . See:

Editing the .strings files for all the languages and making sure they have the same entries is still a lot of work when doing new versions of the application. It would be nice if Xcode had some nice GUI for this...

For simple tasks, there's a utility that accompanies the article that allows you to compare the contents of strings files. There are other tools available to support more industrial strength translation.
