i used cmd-ctl-shift-3 to save image to clipboard and paste to my doc.

cmd-shift-3 saves to TIFF file on your desktop
cmd-shift-4 lets you select an area of the screen

My personal favourite: cmd-shift-4 and then hit the space bar to save a single window to a pdf file. neat!
