No reason to be confused on this if you firing up Apple's Shark profiling/etc. tool. It is an invaluable tool to understand what performance issue you have in just about any Application, driver, etc. on Mac OS X and to evaluate how performance changes are you make adjustments to your software. If you learn any developer tool outside of Xcode this is the one to learn how to use.
