Thanks for these links Douglas, this is exactly what I want to be able to do.
In terms of my motivations for creating something like this, I am aware that a fair few applications exist in this space however besides curiosity and wanting to learn something new I want to integrate the functionality into a larger application which I am in the process of building.
I'm still open to more advice / links to information
