Well, far be it from me to blame the system for my stupid mistakes,
so I'll put this here for the archives and for public chastisement.

It seems when I started to try my own KVO stuff and it broke, I
inadvertently removed just a touch too much code... BAD THINGS HAPPEN
when you are silly enough to accidentally remove your "return self"
from the class init method. ;-)
Thanks for the pointers, and now I really am interested in what the
better approach is: to use IB for bindings or if it really is better
for the long-haul to expose everything through outlets and bind them in
code.
