Getting Started With Database programming

Hi everyone! My name is Jason Gignac, I'm a mac-tech for a medium-sized newspaper in the upper midwest, and a wanna-be programmer.

I've done some programming in the past, but nothing really that I would consider experience. I've done a lot of studying, and understand the THEORY of what I'm trying to do, technically, and have studied just the raw linguistics of it, but what I'm looking for is some good information on learning the theory and practice of programming. How do people organize big projects? How do they plan them?

I'm planning a big MySQL DB, with a Cocoa front end, and some Apple-script/Cocoa output applications. If anyone has any good sources (free ones are the best, of course!) I'd appreciate it! Thanks!
