Preventing windows from loading on addWindowController

My NSDocument subclass uses addWindowController to add 3 NSWindowController subclasses. Even though the windows of two of these subclasses have the "visible at launch time" UNCHECKED, they are still visible. I'm betting that NSDocument automatically calls "showWindow" on the window controllers. What is the best way to prevent this behavior?
