How can I make my application capture the F1-F11 keys system wide (i.e. when my application doesn't have focus)?

In his inessential.com blog last month, Brent Simmons posted a link to the source for a simple app that runs in the background and captures a cmd-esc combination to bring a terminal session to the front. That should point you in the right direction.
