Ok. That shouldn't be a big problem, since I only need a ratio between
the directory sizes. I hope at least. :-)

size of the folder (i.e. all the files in the folder). It's giving you
the number of blocks the folder is using. This is much faster to
calculate but is also much different than the size. If you have, say,
200 files of 1 byte each it might give you a size rating of 1kb (I
believe block size is 512 bytes but I'm not sure).
So du gives you a rough guide to how large a folder is but it's not
the same thing as the actual size.

determine the correct size, even with a big tree behind a folder.
Using the Finder it takes much larger amounts of time, sometimes it
seems to even forget to recurse the directory and doesn't display
anything.
