You would have to create a view subclass and set it to be the content view of the window. Doable, but probably not preferable. In particular from a usability viewpoint - drag entry and exit points should be easy to recongize IMO.


I guess more generally, can a delegate handle the drag
& drop for a view? If I understand correctly, you are
saying that I could use
NSControlTextDidChangeNotification to do handle the
data dropped my text field after it has been dropped
ther, and no need to mess around with implementing the
dragging protocol to catch while it drops. I am going
to give that a try, but it would be nice if the user
could just drop the thing anywhere in the window.

Exactly, and if you do it this way it will also work if the user use copy+paste instead of drag+drop. The less customized you are, the more of the built in functionality will "just work" out of the box. That's something to strive for.
