Subclassing NSSliderCell

i can't seem to figure out what i'm missing. is there an way to subclass NSSliderCell and NSSlider to draw a custom knob and also make the size of the slidercell differt from mini, small, and regular. One of the 2 classes seems to be forcing the height of the horizontal slider, but i can't figure out if there is a way to override a function and stop it. has anyone successfully got this to fly?

thanks in advance,
