I think this is a spinning image. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here. I think what you need to do is subclass NSProgressIndicator, providing your own inverted image.

The progress indicator image is just an image of a bunch of lines gradually alpha-fading out in a clockwise order. Spin that on its center and you get the fading, circulating effect.
