Watching a pasteboard

A question from a lurker...

Is it possible to be notified in some way when the contents of a pasteboard get changed?
I have looked at the available documentation and on the net too, but so far the answer is negative. I still hope that I have missed something!
The only solution so far would be to poll for the change count value, but clearly it's ugly, inefficient and it's still possible to miss changes if the polling interval is too long.
Thanks!
