That assumes there is a key on which the objects can be sorted.
But I am interested in an arbitrary order.
The order my friend puts the toys in is whimsical, remember, and does
not map to any particular quality of the toys.
I do not want to have to write my friend's ordering on the toy itself
because it may not be my toy.

Ah, but there's another magic bag that you can dump the first one into.
It's called an NSArrayController, and can order your toys based on a
series
of NSSortDescriptors, which code nicely and can be stuffed into user
defaults or the document itself.
