I think the GUI should be managed from the main thread; the self terminating popup window should be brought up, written to, and closed from the main thread. Other threads can cause these things to happen by sending messages to the main thread. An example is the ThreadExample program in Cocoa Programming (2002) by Anguish, Buck, and Yacktman
