I can't comment one way or another about XCode 2.X, but in 1.5, you need to enable SCM for your project before you can use Subversion from within XCode.

Open the info inspector for the project, go to the general tab, at the bottom should be a "SCM System" area. Choose Subversion from the pop-up, check the Enable SCM box, and you may need to specify the path to the 'svn' program. The Edit... button will let you enter that path.
