I'm sure my reasons won't be typical because I hardly rank myself with other
developers. I'm totally self-taught in Mac development and, in fact, while
permanently employed with Logica UK I never even had a chance to work on an
OO project!
However, I have developed my own financial compliance software using Cocoa,
and I used it as a private consultancy tool at one of the UK's Big Four, so
perhaps my experience can qualify me as a Mac Developer.
So, for what it's worth.....
1) Mac OSX Seeding
2) Bits and bobs that I only use occasionally, but they help, including
Developer contact points and help lines. Personally, I HATE most online
help desks because they're faceless, the queries that you can look up almost
never address your problems, and there's never any way of getting through to
a human being for help with any problem that's not in the query list. I
find that ADC membership gives me entrée to the Apple organisation for real
answers from real people. This is NOT something to be dismissed lightly.
3) Hardware discount. More importantly, priority ordering. I got a £50
discount on an IPOD 18 months ago and had it within a week (just after the
Christmas rush) when retail suppliers couldn't promise it in less than six
months. So although the discount is nice, I was more interested in having
the hardware.
4) If I lived in the USA and/or earned my living as a Mac developer, rather
than a business analyst, the WWDC would figure high on my list of reasons
for taking out the membership.
Cheers,
Marianne Kern
