Moreover the convention center is about 2 blocks from the cable car
which gets you all the way accross to Fisherman's Wharf in no time.
I wouldn't say that... when I went on the cable car there was about
an hour's wait to get on it, there are so many other tourists wanting
to ride it. Perhaps it's better early in the morning or late in the
evening (if it goes then) when you'd be most likely travelling
between the conference centre and your hotel.
I attempted to reply to the original post but I sent the email from
the wrong address so it bounced. Other people have probably already
said this by now but since I'm posting anyway, here's what that email
said:

I'm also from the other side of the world (and I just moved to the other
side of the world from there, but I'm still on the other side of the world
from SF) so when I went to WWDC2004 I stayed at the extremely expensive
Marriott to be sure that I was close by, and moved to Taylor Hotel at
quarter of the price with free wireless internet as soon as the conference
was over.
Some people say priceline.com is good if you want a good deal, but I think
you have to live in the USA to use that. I found HostelWorld.com
useful, though you'd need to look at one of those map websites I can
never remember the URL of.
