NSMatrix prototype

I'm working with an NSMatrix of text fields that display floating point numbers. An NSNumberFormatter is used to control the way the numbers are displayed in the matrix. The matrix adds and removes cells and I was hoping that by setting the formatter as the formatter of the prototype cell that I could have it automatically applied to any new cells that are created. This doesn't work, so I'm hoping someone has some insights into correct usage of the prototype.
