Holding ALT changes button icon and behaviour - best practice?

Hi,

is there a best practice on how to achive the nifty holding-alt- toggles-button behaviour apps like iTunes or iPhoto have (i.e. for adding smart playlists holding alt changes the icon of the + button)? I'd like to implement this in my app but don't know how to start (especially capturing that holding alt event with no other action required...)...

If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be great! :-)
