A great program to see what's going on is `tcpflow'. I've used it
many times to snoop on html conversations while debugging client/
server connections. It's easy to install with DarwinPorts. This is
what your user could have used.
Another program that will inform users about programs "calling home"
is called "Little Snitch". They can then refuse a connection to be made.
