Well the usual caveats with file ID and volume ID would apply.
They're not necessarily available from all types of filesystems,

Nor am I, but I can reason enough to know that if Spotlight can
compute a kMDItemPath, it must be able to uniquely identify a file.
Spotlight, of course, knows which /Volumes/which/.Spotlight-V100/
store.db it obtained the kMDItemID from, so it can use vn_getpath()
to build the kMDItemPath. As far as I know, anything which is mounted
in /Volumes also has an entry in /.vol/. I'd really like to have
access to that volumeID from the NSMetadataItem / MDItemRef. Is this
possible, or is there any chance of it being made possible? I'm also
certainly not the only one who wants it to be!
Best wishes,
Hamish
