This is one of several bugs in the example projects. This bug happens when a new headerCell is created with an empty string. I fixed some other bugs for my personal testing but didn't not yet contact the author. The author writes in the License Agreement:

You can redistribute the modified code as you wish (without the indented text above).

Therefore I will send you the fixed sourcecode of iTableColumnHeaderCell.m in a private email.
