NSMovieView Audio clicks

using 10.3.8

a simple NSMovieView with a 'load movie' button. load some audio (WAV) and play it. plays fine until you play file number 6 at which point the audio is littered with little clicks.

this behavior is exactly the same on all my 10.3.8 machines but works fine in Tiger. I also tried using the QT API directly but the result was exactly the same!

has anyone seen this?
it's driving me crazy.
