The solution was pretty ugly so I recoded my app to play a playlist by its ID instead of name. A lot less prone to error.

But it can never be, because a literal string in AppleScript is MacRoman
only. There ways of creating a Unicode string in AppleScript, but they are
ugly, and that's now how you do it. See my book for more (or just write me
offline). m.
