I think you'll find the reason for this is because NSData, from which NSMutableData inherits, already has methods for obtaining subranges of data... it's probably seen as unnecessary redundancy to add mutable-specific versions, since the overhead of creating a new instance isn't *that* big to start with, and in many cases you'll want to preserve data outside the range selected, etc.
