I've been trying to figure out if I accidentally disabled logging to
the Run Log or inadvertantly redirected stderr somewhere else - but
can't figure it out.

Check the Console application. I've seen this behavior too, comes and go, I don'tknow why or how. It's likely an XCode rather than Cocoa issue.
